The North Columbus Sports Raiders Travel Team idea was the creation of Pat Williams in 1963 as a team which fell under the umbrella of the NCS program of teams. He wanted to give the youth of North Columbus an opportunity to play on a team with the competitive level above standard recreational play. In 1973 Larry Mull took over the leadership and expansion of the program. At its inception The Raiders were primarily a team for 11 and 12 year olds from the North Columbus area. Over the years the Raiders have competed in many different leagues such as MOBBA, CABA, NABF, USSSA, Babe Ruth, and is currently a member of COYBL.
After years of successful competition winning many League, District, Regional and State Championships, in 1996 the Raiders won its first “National Championship” at the NABF (National Amateur Baseball Federation) Freshman Division World Series in Sylvania, OH. Over the years the Raiders program has helped develop the skills for many past players who went on to successful careers in high school, college and the professional ranks. The list of former players which include High School All City, All League, All District and All Ohio players is extensive along with players who went on to excel at the college and professionally. The common factor for all those teams has been the quality and commitment of their coaching staffs which has always been the programs strong point, along with its “Commitment To Excellence” philosophy. Our intent is not only to develop baseball skills but also help young boys develop their social and personal skills as well.
Larry stepped down in 2000 and the NCS travel program was dormant until 2007 when Carl Swart and Tim Stotler headed up a group to start another NCS travel team. A year later the decision was made to re-establish a “Select Team Program” as an extension of North Columbus Sports, our successful recreational program and thus the NCS Raiders were resurrected. In 2008 Gerry DeLuca took over as Commissioner and Dierector of the NCS Select Travel Teams program as we fielded a 12 year old team. With the addition of many fine coaches we expanded with teams competing in the 9, 10, 11 and 12 year old divisions in COYBL (Central Ohio Youth Baseball League). They compete against other “travel” teams in the Central Ohio area along with teams in places like Mansfield, Zanesville or Marion. In 2011 we added 13, 14 and 15 year old teams that also participate in COYBL. In 2012 we added tournament opportunities to all the teams schedules which enable them to compete around Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan and Illinois.
Another exciting 2010 addition to our legacy was the inception of the First Annual NCS Raider Firecracker Baseball Tournament which benefits the Make A Wish Foundation. Over the past 5 years the Firecracker has raised $120,000 for Wish Kids with life threatening health illnesses Dream Wishes to come true. The tournament is played at our North Columbus Sports complex at Ridgeview Middle School over the Fourth of July holiday with 35 teams participating from all around the State of Ohio. This event has brought a new purpose to the Raiders program by giving our players and several hundred other young players from different comminities a life lesson on how to "Pay Forward" as Woody Hayes said. Our motto is "HELPING KIDS HELP OTHER KIDS" We invite you to click on the Firecracker Tournament link on the website to learn more about our event.
